By Hook or by Crook — A Crisis of Journalism, Not of Climate

In the presence of easily available evidence to the contrary, puportedly flagship German media keep peddling lies about the alleged catastrophic consequences of a global warming trend that has been pausing for 20 years, while proving to be not at all out of the ordinary compared to natural climate variability over the past centuries. 

Spiegel-Online claims ice bears are dying out due to anthropogenic globale warming, when in fact the species has been thriving to the point where the Inuit, people whose lives are actually directly affected by the truth about ice bears, claim that there are too many of the animals around. 

The size of ice bear populations depends primarily on human hunting habits; having been effectively protected from excessive hunting during past decades, ice bears are generally in a healthy state, with their populations increasing significantly in size. 

As for warming, it is a well-corroborated fact that 130.000 years ago ice bears have been able to survive temperatures much higher than today's. These are easily retrieved facts. 

Nevertheless, the Spiegel exploits footage of a dying ice bear to insinuate catstrophic effects of global warming on the ice bear. 

And this is only one facette from a torrent of distortions and lies about climate change with which the public is being constantly showered.

While the climate need not worry us, we are facing a severe crisis of journalism.

Im SPIEGEL-Online wird das Video eines sterbenden Exemplars gezeigt und im Text das Verenden des Tiers dem menschgemachten CO2 zugeschrieben. Sachlich ist der angeblich „aussterbende“ Eisbären natürlich schnell abgehandelt. Zum Ersten kann von Aussterben keine Rede sein, die putzigen Raubtiere vermehren sich aktuell prächtig. Die Verknüpfung von CO2 und einem nicht vorhandenen Phänomen (Aussterben) toppt das Ganze dann bis hin zur extremen Absurdität.

Die folgenden Fakten zum Thema, inklusive den zugehörigen Quellen (hier), (hier), (hier), (hier), (hier), sollten ausreichen. Auch der Blog ACHGUT hat sich des Eisbärunsinns angenommen. Die berühmte Eisbärenforscherin Susan Crockfort hat sogar einen eigenen Artikel über diese Propaganda verfasst. Die Fakten sind derart einfach erreichbar, dass man nicht umhin kommt, beim verantwortlichen Journalisten des SPON bewusste Berichterstattung der Unwahrheit zu konstatieren.

Vom Aussterben des Eisbären kann also keine Rede sein. Seine Population hängt vom Jagdverhalten des Menschen ab, nicht vom vermehrten CO2 in unserer Atmosphäre. Selbst in der extremen Warmzeit vor etwa 130.000 Jahren verschwand der Eisbär nicht. Wenn man freilich lange genug sucht und vom Tierfilmen etwas versteht, wird man für jede Tierart ein verendendes Exemplar als Video ablichten können.
