Les McCann — Compared To What?

Trying to make it real - compared to what?

I love the lie and lie the love
A-Hangin' on, with push and shove
Possession is the motivation
That is hangin' up the God-damn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut (everybody now!)
Tryin' to make it real, compared to what? C'mon baby!

Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old lady kissin' dogs
I hate the human love of that stinking mutt (I can't use it!)
Try to make it real, compared to what? C'mon baby now!

The President, he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason
We're chicken-feathers, all without one nut. God damn it!
Tryin' to make it real, compared to what? (Sock it to me)

Church on Sunday, sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preacher's fillin' us with fright
They all tryin' to teach us what they think is right
They really got to be some kind of nut (I can't use it!)
Tryin' to make it real, compared to what?

Where's that bee and where's that honey?
Where's my God and where's my money?
Unreal values, crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind ol' young King Tut (He did it now)
Tried to make it real, compared to what?!

Tryin' to make it real, compared to what?

Steely Dan — Reelin' in the Years

[Verse 1]
Your everlasting summer and you can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something that you think is gonna last

Well, you wouldn't even know a diamond
If you held it in your hand

The things you think are precious, I can't understand

[Chorus]
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?

[Verse 2]
You been tellin' me you're a genius since you were seventeen
In all the time I've known you, I still don't know what you mean

The weekend at the college didn't turn out like you planned
The things that pass for knowledge, I can't understand

[Chorus]
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
I spend a lot of money and I spent a lot of time
The trip we made to Hollywood is etched upon my mind
After all the things we've done and seen, you find another man
The things you think are useless, I can't understand

[Chorus]
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?
Are you reelin' in the years?
Stowin' away the time?
Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?

A breed apart. I had a Steely-Dan-"phase" in the late 1970s. I don't like the singer's voice, and yet it is an important ingredient in ab appealing musical mix.

Houdini Said

HOUDINI SAID

Doctor in love who is above
All others close to you
Is it the Queen is it obscene
Tell me I want you to
Oh I've often wondered what it is that incites
So many young people to take part in those riots
Whereby all men in blue are the targets to destroy
Lady be good I wish you would
Meanwhile exclusively
Have I the right to print in spite
Of what your views would be
Concerning those matters of the utmost degree
The point being the question and the question being he
Who laughs first has a thirst to laugh longest
Has he?
Over there(over where)
Over there(over where)
On the wall(what wall)
The one in the hall(oh the hall)
I can see(we can see)
Well you could have fooled me

(Break)

Some take the attitude that life is a drag
They say and I quote "Man it just isn't our bag"
But if that's where it's at why the hell don't they go
Houdini said to get out of bed
Was the hardest thing he could do
Yet when he's tied strait-jacket plied
He's out at the count of two
It seems elementary my dear Watson I know
But think what would happen if for instance this show
That we're in should begin not one hour but
Two late
Over there(over where)
Over there(over where)
On the wall(what wall)
The one in the hall(oh the hall)
I can see(we can see)
Well you could have fooled me

Lied vom alten, kranken, müden König

Und nähte ihm das alte Gewand ordentlich

Aber dann verstummten die Abschiedsreden.

Die traurigen blieben (Front-)Soldaten - "Na, macht nichts, hoffentlich".

Spiel auf, Orchester, erklingt, Lieder und Gelächter.

Freunde, was sollen wir uns der Trauer hingeben.

See also here.

Beautiful Waterways of Alsace & Lorraine, France

I get there by car in one to two hours. Simply wonderful.

And Like the First Love ...

The lyrics is available in Russian, English, German and other languages here.

Uriah Heep, Sunrise — (47) Cool in Bygone Days

I have always been a great fan of Uriah Heep. They were coming into their own just at the time when my attention turned to rock music in the early 1970s. That is, in the schoolyard, I learned that it was super cool to listen to this kind of music. Like Santana and Deep Purple, Uriah Heep belonged to the groups whose music struck a chord with me.

Softmachine, Nettle Bed — The Canterbury Sound — (43) Cool in Bygone Days

Image credit. Roughly the view of Canterbury from my room, tough this painting was completed 20 years before I arrived in Kent.

Until a few minutes ago, I didn't know that there was anything like the Canterbury Sound. I spent three lovely years in Canterbury, love the area, and become at once keen-earned whenever the town's name is mentioned.

The view was not as close as this (below), but the painting gives you a sense of the luscious colours in which cathedral and town used to be embedded most of the time.
