Market, State, and Democracy

[Märkte und der Staat sind zutiefst politische Ereignisse. Ihre Qualität ist abhängig von der Qualität der politischen Ordnung, in die sie eingebettet sind. Sollen sie frei bleiben von unerträglichen Vormachtverhältnissen  brauchen wir einen gut funktionierenden politischen Wettbewerb, wie ihn nur die Demokratie gewährleisten kann. Deshalb bin ich besorgt über das nachlassende Bekenntnis zur Demokratie, das man vielerorts sowohl bei den Freunden des Marktes als auch bei denen antrifft, die stark auf den Staat setzen.]

To avoid inappropriate dominance of certain groups and special interests either in the market or by virtue of the powerful coercive institution called the state, democracy — its system of genuine political competition — deserves vigilant protection and dedicated support from us at all times, as being an all-important ingredient in the fight against ‘institutional sclerosis’. 

Both the market and the state are intrinsically political phenomena, the nature of whose outcomes vitally depends on the quality of the political order in which they are embedded.

I am worried about the widespread neglect of, even disdain for, democracy to be found both among supporters of “the market” and their “statist” critics.
