In this article (see below) Godley also points to the disingenuous side of those demanding free trade ("the double standards of so many "free traders""):

There has not even been free trade in food within the EC; quite the contrary — there is an elaborate and obscure system of internal tariffs and subsidies which protects particular interests in a covert and outrageously expensive way.
